According to the Presbyterian Church's Book of Order:
"Ruling Elders are properly the representatives of the people, chosen by them, for the purpose of exercising government and, discipline, in conjunction with Pastors or Ministers.  This office has been understood, by a great part of the Protestant reformed churches, to be designated, in the holy scriptures, by the title of governments; and of who rule well; but do not labor in the word and doctrine."

Listening Elders

Members of the Congregation are welcome to speak with two members of the Session each Sunday immediately following worship in the sanctuary near the baptismal font.  Fresh ideas, concerns, hopes are all welcome.

The Listening Elders encourage members to share their comments before going on to the Coffee Hour.  They will remain in place for approximately fifteen minutes following the Benediction or Musical Response for this purpose.  If conversations need to continue at another time because of the subject matter, arrangements will be gladly made.

Elected by the Congregation, our Elders believe that listening to the congregation is very important. This opportunity (in addition to being identified in the Narthex photo gallery by committee and phone number) is one more way we can communicate.

DEACONS

Class of 2008 Class of 2009 Class of 2010
Terry Birch Madge Birch Suzanne Cook
Jim Demosthenes Marge Jackson Deb Murphy
Bill Mitchell Ian MacLean

The office of the Deacon, as outlined in scripture, is one of sympathy, witness and service after the example of Jesus. Mid-Coast Presbyterian Church's Board of Deacons is comprised of nine individuals who are nominated and elected by the congregation of the church to serve a three-year term.

According to the Presbyterian Church's Book of Order:
"It is the duty of the Deacons, first of all, to minister to those are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith. They shall assume such other duties as may be delegated to them from time to time by the session, such as leading the people in worship through prayers of intercession, reading the Scriptures, presenting the gifts of the people, and assisting with the Lord's Supper."

At MCPC Deacons' work includes:
   - Visitation and care for the sick and housebound
   - Financial assistance in times of need
   - Distribution of meals
   - Preparation and serving of the Lord's Supper
   - Transportation to the church service or to another appointment
   - Participation in the service of worship

It has been said the Deacons are the eyes, ears, hands and feet of the congregation.  We are there to watch over, to listen, to work, and to go where we're needed.
