Emergency Relief for Hurricane Katrina

Katrina Hurricane Relief

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is actively involved in responding to Hurricane Katrina. Money previously given through the annual One Great Hour of Sharing routinely supports Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. However, in this time of unprecedented natural disaster PDA is in need of urgent additional cash contributions.

You can help by making a donation to the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) program by writing a check to Mid-Coast
Presbyterian Church and noting “PDA – Hurricane Katrina” in the memo line.

The MCPC Mission Committee will ask the church treasurer to forward these funds immediately to the PDA relief efforts.

For further information on how to donate using your credit or bank debit card, to participate as "Volunteers for Hurricane Relief" or how to offer your home to host a displaced family see details at www.pcusa.org.

Habitat for Humanity   7 Rivers Maine

From its mission statement: Habitat for Humanity 7 Rivers Maine is a partnership of families, volunteers and contributors working together, without condition or pre-judgment, to eliminate substandard housing in our area. Mid-Coast Presbyterian Church is one of 15 "covenant churches" in the area that provide special support through prayer, volunteers and monetary contributions. Check out what is happening and join us for a most rewarding, worthwhile experience:

1) Habitat / Mid-Coast Presbyterian has four Saturday Work Days per year.  Come out from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM (or for part of the time) to work on a home under construction.  Folks with all skill levels are welcome as well as lunch providers for their Mid-Coast brothers and sisters!

2) The annual Halloween Pumpkin Sale will be coming up again in October '07 at St. John's Church, Brunswick.  All proceeds go to future Habitat builds.  Volunteers will be needed to sell and buyers are needed to "buy."

3) Need Land for a Build  -  Paul Bayliss through his leadership of the Coalition for Affordable Housing in Topsham (CAHT) has been working to find a suitable lot in TOPSHAM upon which a Habitat home could be built.  Mid-Coast Presbyterian Church has committed to sponsor a build from monetary and volunteer perspectives, but cannot start until land is found.  Anyone with any tips should call Paul at 725-1431.

4) Habitat needs YOU to volunteer in a wide variety of jobs: preconstruction assistants, office volunteers, family advocates, human resource committee members, and building committee members. Call Vickie at the Habitat Office 386-5081.

South Africa Partnership
by Paul Brown

Nearly ONE THOUSAND children's books, weighing over 400 pounds have been shipped to our three Partnership churches!

Thank you, Mid-Coast members and friends, for the books, clothing, and money given on behalf of children in Khobonqaba, Davidson Memorial and Adelaide Township.  Inside of each book was a label carrying greeting in English, Xhosa and Afrikaans.

Past summer visits (see September Mid-Coast Monthly) boosted our partnerships with the three South Africa churches.  It provided us opportunities to continue to deepen our understanding and compassion for our Presbyterian brothers and sisters.  Anyone who wants to deepen their own personal tie should contact Paul Brown.  Pen pals for adults and children can be established with much enthusiasm!

Last fall’s children's clothing drive update:
The highly successful collection effort was unfortunately met with high transportation costs and import duty fees.  After much investigation it was determined that shipping the collected clothing would cost "big bucks"; hence, sending money for clothing purchased locally was more effective. Consequently, 1,300 Rand ($200) was sent to each Khobonqaba, Adelaide Township and Davidson Memorial Churches.  Then, some clothing was rerouted to the Sudanese Presbyterian Fellowship of Portland.  Other clothes will be distributed locally.  Stay tuned for further updates!
